Vocabulary (Content Language Development)
missionaries
Students will develop questions during their activity with any unfamiliar words, or groups named in the notes. We will address these questions throughout the process of the activity.
Content Delivery (Method of Instruction)
The teacher will tell the class they will be learning about the spread of Christianity through notes they will use with their partner. They will collaborate and answer questions that will direct them to showing their knowledge by using the map. Students will have a chance to visualize the spread of Christianity throughout the map and develop questions that arise during the process. Questions will be answered during class time while the students are working on their maps. I will lead them through the notes they will use and answer any questions they may have before they start the assignment. Students will work on this lesson during class-time, and arrange with their partner to meet outside of class if more time is needed.

Student Engagement & Critical Thinking (Student Activities)
Students will collaborate and work in pairs to complete this activity. Students will highlight informational from the document to complete the map.
Students will need pens or pencils of two different colors. They will use one color for Catholic missionaries and one color for Protestant missionaries.
Noticing the regions that are labeled on the map, students will use the color they have selected for Catholic missionaries, and make a small cross in each region where Catholic missionaries were active during the early modern era.
Students will use the color they have selected for Protestant missionaries, and make a small cross in each region of the map where Protestant missionaries were active during the early modern era. (In some regions, it may be necessary to draw crosses for both Catholic and Protestant missions.)
Students will label their map “Main Areas of Christian Missionary Activity, 1480-1750 c.e.”
Students will add a legend (explanation) to the map for the colors you have used. For example, “Blue = Catholic. Green = Protestant.”

Demonstrated Learning (Formative & Summative Assessments)
Students will be graded based on a rubric for the map. I will monitor their progress by checking the maps as I walk around the room. If students have questions along the way, I can provide assistance when necessary. Students will work together in pairs to prepare a neat and legible map with accurate information related to the spread of Christianity.

Lesson Closure
Students will display their maps in the room We will have a whole-class wrap-up once everyone has shared their maps about how it would be different today if Christianity did not spread to these areas.

Accommodations for English Learners, Struggling Readers and Students with Special Needs
Students will be working with a partner to work through informational text and display their knowledge by creating a map and providing a legend. This provides multiple representation of instructions and gives them multiple ways to express their knowledge. They will work in pairs to support language development and have multiple entry points to complete the assignment. Additional instructional support and scaffolding will be provided from the teacher when monitoring students' progress.
